Dave Handers is a scientist with a Ph.D. During the crash, his mom suffered nerve damage as well as a piece of shrapnel in a vital area close to her heart. Dave on the other hand suffered damage to his cerebellum and his prefrontal cortex. Dave over time would lose memories as well as cognition and eventually his brain would die killing him over time. Since he is focusing everything on his mother he will lose it faster and so it's about a man's will sacrifice as well as themes of guilt, grief, and tunnel vision as well as the negatives of it.
