Book excerpt: He was “America’s Top Trader, TV’s Big Dealer” for generations of TV viewers. But he thought of himself as Monty from Winnipeg. Monty Hall was more than the host and co-creator of Let’s Make a Deal. He was a dedicated philanthropist who devoted his life to repaying an act of kindness he received as a teenager. By the end of his life, he had raised and donated over $1 billion for worthy causes all over the world. It was a story first told in the 1973 autobiography Emcee Monty Hall, penned by Monty and co-author Bill Libby. Now, author Adam Nedeff (Game Shows FAQ, The Matchless Gene Rayburn) combines that autobiography with new research, plus new interviews with the people who knew Monty best, including his children, his co-workers, and the lovely Carol Merrill, to create a more complete picture of the legendary performer. BILL LIBBY was the author of numerous books about sports figures, including Fran Tarkenton, Pete Rose, Willie Stagell, Wilt Chamberlain, and Rocky Marciano. Beyond sports, he also penned books about Nancy Reagan and the Roosevelt family. He was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey. ADAM NEDEFF is an archivist and researcher for the National Archives of Game Show History, part of the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York. He also works behind the scenes for TV game shows; his credits include Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right, College Bowl and Double Dare. Originally from Vienna, West Virginia, he now resides in Glendale, California.
