Emily Bronte (1818 -1848) and Anne Bronte (1820 -1849) had most of their poetry published in the book Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell (1846). The sisters used masculine pen names for privacy and because the society of the time was often reluctant to take female writers seriously. However, norms have changed.
